Recommended Books and Additional Reading

Majority students preparing for CAT are confused about which books to refer to. CAT as an exam has mutated over last few years. CAT questions have become more tricky, more lengthy and now contain a  complex mixture of 3-4 concepts in the same problem. When it comes to reference books for CAT preparation, only a few books are available at bookstores. Many students then turn to notes provided by tuition classes, even though most of these notes are similar.

Any book or reference material that students use should help him/her develop basic concepts, tips, tricks and strategies. A reference material should give the student sufficient practice on problems with varying difficulty level. A reference material can be considered a credible guide only if concepts are lucidly explained in the most efficient way (aka shortcuts!)  to solve the problems.

Current Affairs – General Knowledge
CAT Score is just the first step, GD/WAT Essay/PI is the next one! so get prepared to build general awareness well in advance. Doing well in the interview/GD/ WAT Essay requires you to be aware of your surroundings and current affairs. In personal interviews the candidate needs to show his/her well rounded personality. This is not something one can pick up in the 2 month gap between the written exam and interviews. This requires the candidate to start orienting herself on this aspect long before even applying for the b-schools.
Make sure that you make it a point to read at least one good newspaper, a weekly current affairs magazine and one business magazine regularly. Also understand that most publications from the same media house would be slightly biased in some respect. A variety of views from different media houses would strengthen your knowledge of the subject and help you especially in the GD/WAT Essay.
